What's hot in the Big Apple
By Sandra Ossei
I've started smiling a lot on my journeys into work and I am really not sure why. The overcrowding and delays remain but I still smile. Perhaps it could be the warmer days of June or being back in my adopted city of New York.
It was only until I started to pack away my winter mitts that I suddenly realised why the smile….The contemplation of ‘what to wear’ and ‘what not to wear’ as summer draws in.
The devil is in the detail, my old boss used to say, and boy oh boy was he right!
Simplicity is the key but there are smatterings of detail every where this summer. The hardy perennial white continues its mainstay in our wardrobe ranging from dresses through to tees. Designers everywhere seem to be adhering to this mantra.
Over at Costume Nacional white remains the focus with sharp tailoring displayed on their catwalks and white dress after dress in abundance at Donna Karan. The traditional glitz and glamour is no where to be seen at the Italian giants D&G opting, instead for the floaty girly dresses that take us back to our childhood.
For those of you that can’t resist displaying the ‘oh so naughty side of you’, try the white lacing at Fendi and the corsetry at Rouland Mouret. With the success of the galaxy dress Mouret is determined to see us ladies wave the flag for cinched in waists.
Ladies, don’t forget that ‘accessories maketh the outfit’ and we are spoilt for choice with this seasons offerings. Continuing their world wide dominance are wide belts but this time cinched at the waist.
You’ll be sorry if you opt for desserts on a date wearing one…
Don’t forget your handbag in of course this season’s colour of choice – white. And hoorah, at last we can pack the kitchen sink as these beauties come OVERSIZED and embellished. Sunglasses too are even bigger… For the colour aficionados put your best foot forward as shoes are playful and colourful from wedges through to stilettos.
And for evening?
I hear you social butterflies cry. Well sparkle and dazzle your way into the wee hours with glitzy but subtle labels such as Marni, Lanvin, Temperley and Proenza Schouler and remain forever the sophisti- GAT, that is… the sophisticated girl about town. Well I am off to prep my boys and girls for the pre-spring 07 presentations. Will tell all in my next column…
Tips for Autumn
Stay ahead of next season by shopping ahead, because yes girls, the fashion savvy recognizes that skinnies will be making an early retirement…
The early surprise for winter will be pleats?
