Do You Have What It Takes To Be a Long Distance Truck Driver?

By Careers Desk

Thursday, December 1, 2016.

The open road, no-one micromanaging you and getting to travel far and wide. In many ways, being a long distance truck driver is the perfect career. But as with any job, there are pros and cons and things to weigh up. Here are just a few of the questions to ask yourself when you’re considering this as a career.

Will You Get Lonely?

Being alone can be either a hugely positive or negative thing, depending on your personality and outlook. If you love solitude and independence, working and driving on your own then you’re likely to suit the lifestyle of a long distance truck driver much more readily. Some find that having time and space to themselves is extremely refreshing and wouldn’t have it any other way. However, if you crave company and human interaction, then you might find you get too lonely and therefore unhappy in this role. It’s no bad thing; it’s just a matter of some people being naturally more suited than others because of the way they think. The average trucking lifestyle is fairly solitary so it’s something to bear in mind.

Does Your Family Rely On You?

Being away from home is something that many families can adapt to, and make it work where everyone is happy. However, this is an issue that you will have to consider when deciding if a long distance lorry driver is the career for you. If you have a new baby and your partner needs support, or you have young children that will miss you if you’re away for chunks of time it could be a difficult change to make. Deciding if it’s the right job for you also means considering the needs of your family, since your decision will affect them too. To compromise, you may be able to choose between doing shorter hauls rather than longer ones so you’ll be away from home for shorter periods of time.

Could You Drive A Large Vehicle?

Driving a huge truck is a lot different than simply driving a car. If you’re already not the most confident driver, then this probably won’t be for you. You’ll need a commercial truck driver’s license, and the skill and confidence to be able to drive this safely for long distances. There’s one thing having the skill to obtain your license, and another actually doing the job day in day out. It requires having excellent focus and concentration, in such a big vehicle on the road any small mistake could lead to disaster. If you’re used to driving long distances, even if it’s not in a heavy vehicle then this is likely to give you the experience and understanding of exactly what it takes.

Depending on your personality and situation, long distance truck driving could be an excellent career choice. Alternatively, you might decide it’s not for you at all, or maybe something to consider in a few years. For example, if you have young children you might want to wait until they’re a little older. Either way, it can be an exciting and rewarding job role for the right kind of person.
