By Careers Desk

Sunday, March 12, 2017.

In today’s market, digital marketing is essential for any company to stay relevant and competitive. With this in mind, there’s certainly been worse times to pursue a career in marketing! However, even when you have an impressive degree in marketing under your belt, it can be very hard to break into this popular niche. If you’re looking to break into the world of marketing, here are some invaluable tips for taking your first steps…

Get Qualified

Just like any career, it’s important to make sure that you’re well-qualified for the entry-level jobs you’ll be applying for. Ideally, you’ll have an online marketing MBA or similar qualification to sling around. However, even if you don’t have one of these, or you’re studying for a degree in a different field, there are many ways to build your resume up. Many marketing companies will offer internships and work experience to candidates who can prove that they have competent written and verbal communication. Alternatively, you could start freelancing in your spare time, selling skills such as copywriting, web development, graphic design and so on. There are also many online qualifications run by companies like Moz that carry a lot of weight in the eyes of employers.

Work on your Communication

There are a lot of skills that people will look for in candidates for entry-level marketing jobs. However, if there’s one that you should put emphasis on before anything else, it’s written and verbal communication.

In marketing, it’s extremely important to be clear and transparent in all correspondence with clients. It’s always better to bombard a client rep with a stream of CCs, rather than have an angry manager call you up and demand to know what they’re paying for! Even if your role doesn’t entail talking directly to any clients, being able to communicate clearly with your colleagues is essential with so many different facets to an average digital marketing campaign.

You may also be called upon to write clear and accessible ad copy, and translate complex information into something much more manageable. If you have any major holes in your communication skills, work on them. It can mean the difference between getting the job you want so badly and letting it slip through your fingers.

Pursue Personal Projects

Although there’s a lot of data, metrics and even psychology involved these days, marketing is still a creative part of business. If you pursue it as such, you’ll show potential employers great initiative, and be able to add more to your portfolio. Don’t be afraid to try out your own ideas for campaigns, and don’t treat every single word that industry leaders say as your gospel.

Things are rarely black and white or clear-cut in the digital marketing niche, and with all the gray areas and uncertainties, it often takes an out-of-the-box approach to actually get results for a client. If you want to make a splash and hit the ground running, pursue personal projects, and have a go at multiple disciplines like SEO, PPC, social media and so on.
