4 Qualities You Need To Climb The Corporate Ladder

By Careers Desk

Thursday, April 27, 2017.

Progressing up the career ladder is not the same thing in comparison to 30 or 40 years ago. It used to be you'd join a company, and pay your dues by working hard, and you would be rewarded for your efforts. Now, the ladder is not so linear, and you may have to progress sideways before moving upwards, which could mean changing careers more than once to get to the position you desire. But whatever your goal, there are some straightforward rules to follow to get ahead of the game in the modern workplace.

Get Educated

One thing that has never changed, and will never change, is getting the best education and training as soon as you can. Having an excellent academic background in the career path you want will give you the necessary tools you need. Now there are more options to get an education, and it’s not just night schools or a part-time course, you can learn online. You can even obtain qualifications like masters degrees through universities like UAB and other reputable institutions. So even if you are too busy to attend a course, you can complete one in your spare time in the comfort of your own home.

Network With The Right People

Even though the expression “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know” has been around forever, it rings true more now than ever. The options to network are incredibly vast, from purpose-built networking events to online networking through sites like LinkedIn, and you can even get a business app on your phone for networking purposes. You are never too far away from a networking event, even when you are at home. Finding the right contacts can get you the best possible start in climbing up the corporate ladder, so find the right people and get on their good side.

Become The “Go-To” Person

Being a fountain of knowledge in your workplace is a title some people feel burdened with because they are constantly being asked a series of questions by anyone and everyone, but you can use this to your advantage. By being a resource, on industry trends, or on tech, you are proving yourself to be an asset to the company, one that your superiors will want to make the most of. This means devouring every bit of information in your spare time, from the industry trends to the latest working practices in China, whatever helps to give you a unique insight makes you very valuable.

Go Beyond What Is Expected Of You

Some might view this as having ideas above your station, but if you don’t work harder than everyone and venture beyond your job description, you aren’t making yourself worthy of any promotion. Hard work is an asset that people still value now, and although you don’t need to work 70 hours a week, you still need to show that you are the first person in and the last person out of the office. Work smart as well as hard!
