As a parent, you are probably all too aware of the dreaded question “Are we there yet?” asked over and over again. But as the summer rolls around once again, it is more than likely that you will be wanting to head out on a road trip so keeping your kids entertained on long journeys is hugely important for your own peace of mind! Luckily, technology has made this easier than ever before but there are still plenty of old-fashioned games and activities to try out too. Here are just a few of them if you are struggling for ideas.

Activity Books

While iPads provide a whole host of games and activities, sometimes it is still a nice idea to give your kids some activity books to complete. There are plenty of options to choose from such as drawing, colouring or puzzles which can really encourage your kids to engage the creative and problem-solving parts of the brain.

Audiobooks

Many kids suffer from travel sickness when they try to read in the car, so audiobooks are the natural solution to this problem. Listening to stories while you are travelling along helps kids to get lost in their own imagination while they are staring out of the window. An added bonus is that you will probably get sucked in by these stories too and they will keep you from getting bored as well!

Tablet

Okay, there is no denying that a tablet provides a whole range of options for kids while you are travelling. As well as a wealth of games, there are also video watching apps like Cinema Box HD which can keep them entertained for hours. Remember to download a host of different options before you set off and long journeys should fly by for your kids.

Travel Games

Sometimes, you just can’t beat the classics and some of these travel games are about as classic as you can get! The likes of I-Spy, Word Association and Twenty Questions have been around for so long for a reason. So, rather than all staying quiet while you are travelling along, playing these games can help you to bond as a family.

Snacks

Your kids are definitely most likely to drive you crazy when they are hungry or sleepy so having plenty of snacks in the car at least deals with one of the problems. Though your kids are bound to want to choose the sugary or unhealthy options, try to encourage them to eat some foods that take longer to eat and will keep them full for longer like raisins and bananas.

Tell a Story

If you have a fertile imagination, try making up a story to keep your kids entertained. If not, you can always tell them some interesting tales from when you were a kid. Even if they don’t really want to hear them, you have a captive audience! Another option could be to let your kids make up a story as this is a great way to encourage their creativity to shine.
