5 Ways to be a Better Boss

When we start businesses or start to expand our business, there’s a lot to think about. We take the time to plan our products and services carefully. We spend our time and money on market research. We prepare business plans and financial forecasts. You might have considered things like marketing and accounting, as well as looking for the perfect office space or storefront. But, there is one thing that few of us give any consideration, and that’s what kind of boss we might be.


In the early days, you might not be able to afford staff, or your team might consist of you and a few others. Management is easy when recruitment is casual, and business is slow. Then, when things start to pick up, you might need to take your recruitment processes more seriously. You’ll need to take the time to find the right employees to help you to grow your business while maintaining quality and consistency.


When this happens, especially if it happens suddenly, you might find that you’re not quite the manager that you always thought that you would be. You might have had bad bosses yourself, and told yourself that you’d be different. That you’d be flexible, understanding and above all, kind. But, when it’s your turn, you might find that there is so much more to think about and when you are under pressure, you are none of those things. Here are some of the easiest ways that you can be a better boss.


Get to Know Your Team


Your team members are all different. They have different needs, different strengths, and different weaknesses. If you want to be the kind of manager that gets the best out of them while building loyal relationships, you need to understand them and the best way to do this is getting to know them.


Praise Hard Work


Most of us are guilty of jumping on the negatives and failing to notice the positives. Those team members that always do their job well, but never make a fuss, often fly under the radar of less than exceptional managers. If you want to keep getting their best, praise them. Look into an Employee benefits scheme and remember to say thank you at the end of the day.


Help Your Employees to Grow


The worst managers hinder growth. They worry that if their employees learn too much, they will be too powerful, or they will leave. While it’s true that one day, well-trained staff might grow too big for your small pond, it’s also true that they’ll be motivated, loyal and able to do their jobs well while you have got them.


Communication is Key


Staff work better when they understand why they are being asked to do something. The best managers are great communicators. They explain themselves well, and they create an open and honest working environment.


Give Yourself a Break


We’re all guilty of snapping when we’re tired and stressed out. Give yourself a break, and you’ll treat others better.


When you’ve got so much to think about, your management style might not seem important. But, it is. A good manager gets more from their team. Their businesses have lower levels of staff turnover, which can save them money and improve performance. Looking after your team can mean that they are loyal, hardworking and committed, which can have a great many benefits for your business.
