The Ins and Outs of the Legal Career Path

A legal career path may be something that you have thought about going down in your future, or it may not. The prospects of massive debt and years of hard work are probably contributing factors if you are more the latter — but studying to become a lawyer is worthwhile. It is worthwhile because it offers up massive earning potential and because it offers up a significant standing in community. First of all, there is going to be a lot of stress involved when both training to become a lawyer and when you actually become one. What with all the deadlines, pressures of billing, the very long hours and the fact that you have to keep your finger on the pulse of the ever-changing laws, it’s definitely not a professional for those that want an easy working life.

As well as this there is the added pressures of the digital age, that we are currently in the midst of, constantly inducing new technologies and trends in the legal industry. These include E-Discovery, Legal Process Outsourcing and Virtual Law Firms, just to name a few. So, on the path to becoming a lawyer and maintaining a successful career as on: you must be prepared to have the directions changed frequently.

You should also be aware that it is a highly competitive job market. There has been a cut back in openings for lawyers in recent memory, but not a cut-back in regards to those that are heading to university and graduating as a lawyer. This means that there are always going to be more and more people trying to get a job, and less and less jobs being made readily available for them.

There is also, of course, the pressures aroused by client demands. In this day and age, clients are prone to demand more value for the services that they seek in all aspects of life, not just legally. For the legal market, however, this means that the there is no longer a need for lawyers that set rates that, although are worth paying for, are still expensive for most potential clients; this means that paralegals are more likely to take business nowadays, rather than fully fledged lawyers, even when they have a rich and extensive history of court wins.

There is also the obvious fact that a client may seek your help even when you do not agree with the case that they are asking you to defend. It is pivotal to work under the Lawyer’s Code of Professional Responsibility at all times when you are a lawyer, even when it goes against everything you stand for and believe in.
