How To Change The World In Five Careers

Let’s face it: not every job is particularly fulfilling. A lot of people are absolutely fine with working for the weekend and leaving their 9-5 job at the door before relaxing in the evenings, but not all of us are okay with that. Here are a few jobs that you could consider taking up if you’d like to do your part to change the world…

Teacher

There are very few people more important in the life of a child than their teacher. At times it can be a thankless job – the pay isn’t great, and sometimes it can definitely feel more as though you’re trying to control a mob of rampant children instead of teaching them how to analyse a poem or understand the body’s central nervous system. But the truth is that a good teacher can really change a child’s life – showing the importance of patience, diligence, hard work and kindness can be something that a young person carries with them and is inspired by for the rest of their lives.

Nurse

If you’re thinking about going into medicine, a lot of people tend to go for the relative glory of being a doctor or a surgeon – but if you want to make an everyday difference to people’s lives, then look no further because nursing would be an incredible career for you. Of course it’s fiercely academic – you’ll need to know the signs and symptoms of myriads of illnesses, how to work with instruments like Foremost’s autoclave sterilizers, how to administer various medications safely – but you’ll also provide support and care for countless families during your life as a nurse.

Non-Profit Work

No one’s ever going to become a millionaire if they work for a non-profit, but let’s face it: that doesn’t matter when you know that the work you’re doing really matters. If you excel in an office environment and you’re interested in communications, or if you’re a qualified accountant and great with figures, but you don’t want to work for a huge corporation, then non-profit work is absolutely for you.

Counselor

After undergoing a difficult event like a bereavement or a divorce, pretty much everyone benefits from counseling. Having someone who’s completely neutral and non-judgemental is something that can really improve your mental health and that can help you heal. If you’re a good listener, becoming a counselor could be a great career move for you. It’s important to make sure that you’re the sort of person who can detach easily from work issues when you get home – and if you’re a counselor, you’ll understand the importance of getting counseling yourself.

Journalist

A lot of people think that journalists are scumbags, but nothing could be further from the truth. Of course there are unethical journalists like the ones who tail celebrities everywhere and pry into the personal lives of innocent people who have undergone traumatic events, but the role of a journalist is a crucial one: to present information to the public. In order to live in a civilised society and a good democracy, the general public must be informed about what’s going on in the world, and it’s a journalist’s role to provide this information.
