The idea of a ‘dream job’ may seem somewhat fanciful and not something that many people can afford to look out for, but in reality, if you start right from the beginning, dream jobs are much more plentiful than you might imagine. You simply need to be honest with yourself about what you want from a job and then finding one becomes less of a problem. Read on to find out how to get started when you are searching for the job of your dreams.
What Makes You Happy?
The basis of any dream job is one that allows you to do something that makes you feel happy every day. Of course, there will be difficult days, no job can be without them, but it is important that the overall experience is a positive one.
So what is it that makes you happy? Make a list of all the things you love and how they enhance your life, and this will give you an idea of the kind of sector you need to be searching in. You might want to start by thinking about your hobbies, for example, or things you used to do as a child.
What Are You Good At?
Once you have worked out what it is that makes you happy, you need to then look at what you are good at. Just because you love baking cakes, for example, doesn’t mean you are good at it – at least not in a professional sense. This is where you need to be completely honest with yourself and work out what it is that you can do better than anyone else, or at least better than the other people who might be applying for any position that you find.
If there is something that you enjoy and that you have a good level of skill at, you might consider gaining additional experience or further qualifications to ensure that, when you write your CV, you are truly at the top of the list. Don’t forget to write a cover letter too, as this can show your personality and make you stand out which is particularly important if the job you are applying for is a popular one. There are lots of cover letter examples online to look at to make sure you get it right.
What Work-Life Balance Are You Looking For?
A dream job is not simply something that you enjoy and that you are good at – you also need to consider the work-life balance that goes along with it. If the hours are long and you don’t get to see your family or friends or have much time to relax, it won’t matter how much you love what you do; you’ll burn out and have to stop.
It’s essential, therefore, to know what will be expected of you when you find the job of your dreams (or at least what looks like it) because it might not fit in with your own hopes and expectations. For some, the only way to obtain the ideal work-life balance is to start their own business, and this might be the best way to enjoy your dream job too.
