When looking for a new career, you may have decided that you’d like to work with people. It is not uncommon for people to want to work in a job or career that allows them to give back to society and to help other people who may be experiencing a trying time in life.

While you may know that you’d like to give back in your work, you may not be quite sure what you’d like to do for work.

In this article, we’ll suggest six different career paths that you may want to consider that will allow you to give back to society and help other people.

Counselling

Mental health problems affect one in four people. With issues such as depression, stress, anxiety, and addiction affecting so many people, there is a definite need for the help that a counsellor or therapist can provide.

By studying counselling at a university level, you’ll open yourself up to a lot of potential career paths including general counseling, or specialist support for personality disorders, addiction, or behavioural issues.

Nursing

Nurses are the backbone of the health service. Without qualified nurses assisting in the administering of care and supporting doctors in their work, there wouldn’t be a health service. Nursing is a job that requires a lot of hard work and patience. Nurses work tirelessly, but it is a very rewarding career.

You’ll need to complete a nursing degree, but you’ll have the option to specialise and work within the area of nursing that best suits you.

Social Worker

A social worker can change the life of children and families. Social workers work hard to take care of children that have been abused or neglected. They check on vulnerable families to ensure that they have food and a safe place to live.

To become a social worker, you will need to complete a degree.

Care Assistant

If you want to provide care for elderly or disabled people, then you could become a care assistant. Typical tasks include helping people wash and dress, feeding, helping with medication, and providing emotional support.

You may not need any formal qualifications to become a care assistant however there are often vocational qualifications that you could obtain.

Marriage Counsellor

A marriage counsellor keeps couples and families together. When a couple reaches breaking point, a couples therapist or marriage counsellor can often health the divide by teaching couples to talk to one another again. Not only that, but they can also be useful in the facilitation of difficult conversations.

Marriage counsellors generally hold master’s level degrees.

Lawyer

There are many different types of lawyer, many of which give back to society. Lawyers defend people in court and protect their rights as they do so. They often argue on behalf of someone who has been wronged.

On occasions, lawyers will take pro-bono cases to ensure everyone is able to get legal counsel.

To become a lawyer, you’ll need to complete a law degree and pass the bar exam.
