IT’S THE SEASON TO BE HEALTHY

It’s that time again. The time of year where we get to spread a little holiday cheer, wish everyone peace and love for another year and break all the rules that we have lived by for the past 11 months!

This is also the time that we begin to really feel the pressure of trying to maintain the progress we have gained in weight loss success.

Every positive habit we have developed is being tested and tried and if we are lucky, we will come out unscathed on New Year’s Day. Healthy, happy, and still full of good cheer and wishes for peace on earth and good will toward men.

So, how do we get our exercise in during this hectic time of year? Here are a few suggestions:

• Dancing. Christmas parties are a constant during this time of year. So dance, dance, dance. Take lessons using your favourite aerobic video (hip hop, salsa, Latin, belly dancing) and when you feel ready, try your new moves at your favourite club or at the next party. Dance for at least one hour each time you go out and you will give your body the best workout without even trying.

• Train like a boxer. Take up a kickboxing class or cardio kickboxing and release some stress from all of the hustle and bustle and crowds.

• Power walking. If you are going to be shopping for gifts, why not take a couple of laps around the shopping centre before you go in. Once you are inside, take the steps or walk up the escalator instead of riding between floors.

• Free classes. Take advantage of some of the free offers at local health clubs to try before you buy. Most facilities offer one- or two-week free passes for local residents with the hopes of luring you into a membership. Why not take the opportunity to grab a friend and take a couple of classes. It’s the best deal in town.

• Sight seeing. After your Christmas dinner, instead of sitting on the sofa, take a family walk to see the decorations in your neighbourhood.
