Design A Kitchen That’s Perfect For Your FamilyBy Features DeskWednesday, August 30, 2016.Talk to anyone who works in real estate or interior design, and they’ll tell you that the kitchen is the heart of the home. Aside from your living room, this is the main communal area where you and your family can come to talk about the highs and lows of the day. If you’re getting ready to remodel your kitchen, then you may find the designing side of it a little tougher than you’d expect. Here are some helpful tips to get you started. Image: WikimediaObviously, it’s your home, and you should keep your own personal style in mind when you’re remodelling your kitchen. However, you shouldn’t keep your tastes so rigid that you’re afraid of pushing the boundaries. Right now, it may be tempting to take the safer option of having an all-whites-and-greys kitchen. However, you may find it a lot more rewarding to think outside the box and choose a design that you wouldn’t have usually thought of. If your last kitchen had grayscale lino, then look at some hardwood timber floors instead. If you’ve gotten used to classic, antiquated faucets, then why not consider a more modern, minimalist design? Sure, it should relate to the rest of the home, but don’t be scared of trying to keep your interior evolving. Breaking the rules a little with your new kitchen could be the breath of fresh air you’ve been wanting for years! Okay, while it can be a great thing to think outside the box with a new kitchen design, sometimes people can over-step this, and end up with a kitchen that literally doesn’t work. Obviously, you want your kitchen to look amazing to anyone who sees it. However, you also need it to be functional and ergonomic. It’s probably not practical to hire a professional designer, so you’ll have to make up for this expertise by taking a steady, careful approach to every decision. Before ordering that shiny new dishwasher, get the dimensions when it’s open so that it doesn’t block anyone’s path. Make sure there’s going to be ample storage and counter space so you don’t have to throw out half the crockery you own. These little considerations can save you a world of hassle in the long run!Image: Wikimedia Finally, be sure to consider durability when it comes to choosing the materials for your kitchen. Like many of us, you may have read an interior design article and started having daydreams about a kitchen that’s full of gorgeous white marble. While these kitchens are certainly stunning, marble is a very high-maintenance material. Many people aren’t aware that it’s very porous, which makes getting stains out a real challenge. Needless to say you’ll live to regret such a decision! You’ll probably have your next kitchen for at least another ten years, so my advice is to go for materials that are durable rather than good-looking. The finished result may not be what you had in mind, but choosing the right materials will save you countless hours of gruelling housework!
