Some people are motivated primarily by money. Their career choices aren’t based on the nature of the job, but the salary alone. They don’t mind what they do day to day, or whether it’s important or not, as long as they have a healthy paycheck every month. But for some people, that’s not enough. Certain people are motivated by job satisfaction over salary. They would rather be doing something meaningful and important with their time, and this comes before salary. If you would rather take a smaller salary and find yourself something valuable to do for a career, these are some of your best options.
Teacher
Being a teacher is one of the most rewarding jobs out there, and one of the most important. Without a good education, the next generation won’t be able to flourish so it is vital that we have enough great teachers. If you want to play a central role in shaping the young minds that will change the world in years to come, then being a teacher is the career for you. You’ve got a few options when it comes to teaching; you could be a kindergarten teacher if you are more interested in helping younger children. This isn’t the right fit for certain people that would rather be teaching a more advanced curriculum. If that sounds like you, then high school kids might be more your speed, however, disciplining kids of that age is going to be much harder so you need to be an outgoing person if you’re going to succeed. All teachers need at least a bachelor’s degree and some classroom experience before you can continue with education and get fully qualified as a teacher.
Social Worker
A social worker is an incredibly important job, but also a very difficult one. People run into all sorts of problems in life and sometimes, it’s difficult for them to deal with them alone. That’s where a social worker comes in. Part of your day to day work will involve dealing with very difficult and traumatic situations and it takes a certain type of person to take that on. If you don’t deal well with stress, then being a social worker will probably be too much for you. But if you think you are strong enough to deal with it, there is an immense amount of satisfaction involved in helping people. Training doesn’t have to mean going back into education full-time. You can do an lcsw degree online. By doing it from home, you can complete your degree in your own time, while you’re still working. That makes it perfect for anybody that wants to move into social work later in life. It’s often best for people to change into a career in social work when they’re a little older because that extra life experience will better equip them to deal with the difficult situations that you’ll find yourself in.
Psychiatrist
The dangers of mental health problems have been overlooked for a long time, but in recent years, they are starting to be recognized. Helping people to deal with any mental health issues that they are having is just as important as curing any physical ailments that they have. That’s why being a psychiatrist is one of the most rewarding and important jobs out there. Medications can go some way to relieving the symptoms of mental health problems, but they often don’t get to the root cause of the problem. The kinds of talking therapies that psychiatrists offer are the best way to give people the help that they need. It’s more important than ever now because suicide rates are increasing, particularly among middle aged men. A good psychiatrist can save somebody’s life. If you want to be a psychiatrist, you’ll have to study at a good college to get qualified, but it will be worth the time and effort because not only is it a rewarding job, it’s also a very high paying one with an average salary of around $190,000.
Clergy
While teachers act in part as a moral guide for young people, religious figures fulfil that role for some children. For members of the church, their religious leaders form a hugely important part of their life and they become the person that they turn to for advice. While you don’t need to have as many traditional qualifications as you would for the rest of the jobs on this list, you need to be an expert in your field. You’ll need a deep understanding of the history and theology of your chosen faith. However, it’s not just about the religion itself. Being a high ranking member of the church involves a lot of leadership so you need to be able to display those skills.
Any one of these careers is perfect for a person that puts meaningful work over salary.
