LeAnna Taylor – Tobago’s Youngest Published AuthorInterviewed by Shaun Ajamu HutchinsonSaturday, September 18, 2021.‘I want to see my book in the library, in schools and in bookstores all over the world. I want my book to be everywhere, even on Google.’ These are ambitious words of 6 year old Plymouth (Tobago) schoolgirl LeAnna Taylor, who has had one of her stories published locally by Eutille Duncan Publishing, Ltd.  The Bethesda Government Primary School pupil’s picture book Jamey in America shares a child’s excitement of a visit to the United States. Owner of the publishing house Eutille Duncan, explained that the young writer’s Mother and Aunt initially shared the story with her, recorded in a copy book, and Ms Duncan said that she was immediately impresssed of how well written, structured and illustrated it was. Having already overseen publication of several titles, including her own novel In a Fine Castle, she was certain that LeAnna Taylor’s story would translate well in published form. Tobagonian illustrator Miguel Lashley, also helped on the project, transforming the sketches and drawings into colourful, digital images.Possibly the youngest published writer in Tobago’s literary history, Miss Taylor is also a regular at First Mic, the Tobago Writers Guild’s open mic space ,where school age children showcase their stories, poems and creative skills. The ambitious Standard One storyteller already has her next book planned and with the vision of a veteran, and she hopes her debut will be widely read. Where did you get the idea to write the book?Well… I started writing this book when I was three years old. I just started writing it and I thought it would have been good to send it to people [as] something they can read it as well. Where did you get the idea to write about a young girl travelling in America country?I already learnt about America and I know it’s a different country.  I want to go to America someday. What will your next book be about? The next story will be ’The Poor Little Whale’. I already drew the pictures for it.What do you enjoy most, writing the stories or drawing the pictures?I like drawing and writing the whole book; also I like to write poems.Do you miss your friends at Bethesda Government Primary School?Yes I miss my friends at school [but] I don’t want to get the corona virus;  if I want to go to school I will just put on my face mask and go to school. Are you enjoying the online learning?Yes I enjoyed the online learning, and being in front of the computer. Are you excited to see your first book published?Yes.
